Milwaukie Asks for Help to Clear Storm Drains

To alleviate nasty flood-like conditions around town the City of Milwaukie is asking residents to help out by removing leaves and other debris from around storm drains.

The City maintains more than 37 miles of storm water pipe, 1,600 catch basins, and 198 drywells, but only has five full-time crewmembers to maintain the system. When the leaves start falling and the rains start coming down, storm drains get clogged with leaves and small ponds begin to form. While the crew is busy this time of year unclogging trouble spots, help is needed and is always appreciated.

Citizens including single-family homeowners, businesses, condo owners, and homeowner associations are asked to help unblock storm drains from debris to allow storm water to drain properly.

The combination of rain and clogged storm drains can lead to flooding creeks and streams, which certainly causes problems for residents and businesses in low-lying areas. Heavy rains place additional burdens on the storm water system, so it’s important drains are cleared and open.

If you can help, please be safe, remember you'll be on the edge of a street and cars may not be able to see you very well.
