South Downtown Concept Unveiled

The rendering, South Downtown Plan Aerial, describes a vision for Milwaukie’s South Downtown that pulls together projects that are already in the works and ones that are just over the horizon. While it’s a new plan, many of the projects are not. This concept plan suggests how open space, parks and public amenities can tie the downtown together with Milwaukie’s scenic natural setting.

City Council reviewed the plan in November, supported its direction and asked staff to share it with the neighborhoods and other stakeholders. This web page aims to get your thoughts and opinions on this concept while it’s still just that - a concept.

Thanks for taking the time to review it and letting staff know what you think.

Key Features of the South Downtown Concept:

  • Public plaza on the current post office site south of Adams. The post office would be relocated on a nearby block. The plaza would host the Milwaukie Farmers Market and other civic events.

  • A Lake Road Light Rail MAX station.

  • Pedestrian connections from the plaza to Milwaukie High School, Robert Kronberg Park, a new Kellogg Creek Park, and the future Milwaukie Riverfront Park.

  • Redevelopment of the City-owned “Cash Spot” site with structured parking and retail on Main Street.

  • Restoration of Kellogg Creek for native salmon and other endangered fish species. Mixed used development around the plaza would both support, and be supported by, the public amenities described in the plan.

As stated above, this is just a concept. The City is planning to hold a series of public planning meetings next spring to really get into the details of the plan and to refine its different elements. Right now the City is hoping residents will share their general comments and become familiar with the effort. So please take a look and respond to the questions below.

1. Of the proposed concept, which elements are of most interest to you?

2. Do you think the concept is on the right track?

3. Is there anything you would like to add? Do you have any other comments?
