Milwaukie Police are restarting the K9 program which had ended in 1992 due to attrition and retirement of two police dogs. Citizens benefit from the use of a K9 in the tracking and apprehension of criminals. Many of the subjects sought by police might not be found without the use of a K9. Nearby agencies can also benefit from the use of a K9 in Milwaukie through inter-agency agreements. The use of a K9 benefits the community by reducing crime and making the city a safer place to live.

Officer John Truong has begun the effort to raise funds to pay for the program. The goal is to meet or exceed $25,000, which will pay for the dog, training, equipment and the outfitting of a police vehicle. To date $22,000 has been raised for the program. In an effort to raise funds for the program a raffle is being held on March 31, 2008. Raffle tickets will be sold at the Public Safety Building (Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm). Tickets are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. So far winners could receive:

• Nintendo Wii

• Apple iPod Nano

• Target Gift Card $50

• Pet Smart Gift Card $30

• Red Brick Pizza Certificates (4 small pizzas - value $24)

• Starbucks 2 lbs. whole bean coffee (value $20)

• Starbucks 5 pkgs. of assorted ground coffee + swivel

On March 29 Purdy's Car Wash, on 3075 SE Harrison, will hold a fundraiser by donating $5 from every car wash from 7:00 am to 7:00 pm to the program.

On April 24, at 11:00 am Albertson's and Milk-Bone will make a donation to the K9 program in an event held at the Milwaukie Albertson's. Mayor Jim Bernard will be at the event which will feature a K9 demonstration.

Donations to the program can be mailed or dropped off at any of the City of Milwaukie offices.  Mailed donations should be sent to: City of Milwaukie, Public Safety Building, 3200 SE Harrison Street, Milwaukie, OR 97222, indicating the funds go to the Milwaukie K9 program.
