Milwaukie Daze Returns!

After a one-year hiatus the City of Milwaukie’s summer parade is back! The Milwaukie Daze Parade, one of the City’s most valued traditions since 1972, will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2008.

The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the old Southgate Theater site (9600 S.E. Main St.) and will continue south on a one-mile parade route ending at the Portland Waldorf School parking lot at SE 21st Avenue and Monroe Street.

In an effort to encourage participation from all groups, this event is free and all are welcome to join the procession: families, school groups, Cub Scout packs, sports teams, social and service clubs, PTA's, Neighborhood Associations or local businesses. Entrants can decorate a float, a bicycle or simply gather as a group to celebrate the community. The theme of this year’s parade is “Old Time Milwaukie” - and while following the theme is certainly not required, it is offered as a suggestion. Entrants can shape their participation around celebrating people or events from Milwaukie's past ranging from the first settlers of Milwaukie, Oregon Trail history or even more recently, what citizens remember about Milwaukie when they were children!

For more information on how to participate, volunteer or donate to the event please contact volunteer organizers Tamara Huber or Alicia Hamilton at milwaukiedaze@gmail.com. Click here to download the parade application.

Poetry Picnic To Take Place On July 26th

The first annual Ledding Library Poetry Picnic will take place at 12:30PM (one half hour past noon) on Saturday, July 26th in conjunction with Milwaukie Daze. Held in the Scott Park Amphitheater on the grounds of Ledding Library, poets of all persuasions are invited to read their favorite poems to the assembled audience. This event promises to be an afternoon of sharing poetry and fellowship with family and friends. All non-poets are welcome to come to the Poetry Picnic as well and just listen to the readings. So after the Milwaukie Daze Parade ends, bring your lunch to Scott Park and enjoy a relaxing afternoon of poetry in a beautiful setting.
